IJN Hiryū Carrier Summary
This is a 3D printed sculpt of the Hiryū Aircraft Carrier by EBard Models.An alternative to out of the box Axis and Allies pieces, 3D print opens a new world of customized pieces, where basically any historical ship can be obtained. We at A&A Boardgaming endorse these new pieces and will be offering a host of new ships over time, all custom painted and magnetized.
The Hiryū was created from a modified Soryu design. She can most readily be distinguished from the Soryu by her island, which is on the port side instead of the traditional starboard side.
Hiryū participated in many early war operations, including the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Indian ocean raids. She was sent to look for the Hornet and Enterprise after the Doolittle raid but could not find any targets. She then participated in the Battle of Midway. At Midway she sustained critical damage after her planes crippled the Yorktown. The damage to both the Hiryū and Yorktown caused them to be scuttled.
The IJN program to quickly mass produce the carriers lost at Midway were the Unryu class, which was based on a modified Hiryu design.
