USN TBF Avenger Summary
This is a 3D printed sculpt of the TBF Avenger torpedo bomber from GamingStar.
The Grumman TBF Avenger entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. It become the most effective and widely-used torpedo bomber of World War II.
The Avenger was designed to replace the Douglas TBD Devastator, the U.S. Navy's main torpedo bomber at the time, introduced in 1935. The result was a large and heavy aircraft. So heavy, the Avenger was the heaviest single-engined aircraft of World War II. A key Grumman feature was the mechanical folding wings that helped reduce its footprint while carrier based.
It performed better than any previous American torpedo bomber, and better than its Japanese counterpart, the obsolete Nakajima B5N "Kate". The Avenger was credited with several high profile actions including sinking several enemy battleships (including the Hiei, Yamato & Musashi) and carriers such as the Ryujo and the Hiyo. Later Avenger models carried radar equipment for the ASW and AEW roles and was credited with sinking 30 submarines.
